Macao's gambling revenue almost doubled in May: report

Macao, the world's biggest gambling hub, realized 17 billion patacas in casino gambling revenue last month, almost doubled from 8.8 billion patacas a year earlier, sources reported, citing an insider who requested anonymity.In the period from January to May, the city's gambling revenue increased to around 72 billion patacas from 43 billion patacas in the same period of last year. Macao, which surpassed the Las Vegas Strip as the world's largest gambling hub in 2006, saw its gambling revenue surge 57% in the first three months of this year to approximately 41 billion patacas. Macao's Statistics and Census Service said that the number of paid employees of Macao's wholesale and retail trade rose 12.3% from a year earlier to 29,211 at the end of 2009. Last December, the average earnings, excluding bonuses and allowances, for full-time employees of the wholesale and retail trade increased 5.7% year on year to 9,090 patacas. Sales representatives and salespersons earned 12,070 patacas and 7,510 patacas on average, respectively.
